It is with great respect and confidence that I recommend the conducting masterclasses led by Naoki Sugiyama. I have had the pleasure of knowing Naoki for many years, ever since our paths crossed during my studies in orchestral conducting with Uroš Lajovic in Vienna. Over the years, Naoki has collaborated with me on numerous projects, often assisting and contributing invaluable insight throughout the process.

Naoki possesses a profound and comprehensive knowledge of classical music history and repertoire, spanning both the symphonic and operatic traditions. His extensive experience is evident not only in his approach to scores, but also in the way he works with orchestras. His conducting technique is clear, reliable, and expressive, but what distinguishes him most — and what makes him an exceptional mentor — is his remarkable understanding of the rehearsal process. He shapes music with patience, intelligence, and deep artistic intention.

As someone younger, I have learned a great deal from working alongside Naoki. I strongly believe that musical maturity, the kind that can only be developed through decades of experience and personal evolution, is essential in a conductor. While I am still on my journey toward becoming the artist I aspire to be, Naoki has already cultivated a rich and thoughtful musical voice, formed by a lifetime of dedicated work, reflection, and listening. This depth of perspective is something that younger generations, myself included, are still in the process of acquiring.

Naoki Sugiyama is an artist with something meaningful and personal to express. I am confident that any student participating in his masterclass will benefit immensely from his depth, artistic integrity, and maturity. I offer my full and sincere support for his pedagogical work and his academy.
