About Us
Our History
The Japanese-German Philharmonic Society was founded in 1991 under Kurt Redel — world-renowned conductor and flutist — with the support of the German Embassy in Japan and Lufthansa.
For over 35 years, we have promoted international musical exchange through collaborations with orchestras in Germany and Austria, opera and chamber music concerts, European concert tours, and conducting masterclasses in Japan and Europe.

I have known Naoki Sugiyama since his studies at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna (mdw) in 1985 — as a conductor, trombonist, and a highly dedicated and capable organiser.
With great respect and conviction, I recommend the conducting masterclass organised by Naoki Sugiyama. Our acquaintance dates back to our studies in orchestral conducting under Uros Lajovic in Vienna.
The conducting masterclass of the Japanese-German Philharmonic Society was founded by Naoki Sugiyama, who studied under Herbert Kegel and Kurt Redel — two of the defining conductors of late 20th-century Germany.
I had the opportunity to participate in Naoki Sugiyama's conducting masterclass in Tallinn, Estonia in July 2013 with the Tallinn Sinfonietta, and in Vienna, Austria in September 2015 with the Beethoven Orchestra.
It is my pleasure and honour to recommend the Conducting Masterclasses led by Naoki Sugiyama. During my conducting studies in Vienna, he provided me with a profound and clear insight as both conductor and orchestra musician — even referencing different editions of the same score.
