International Summer Academy 2026: Mastering Romantic Orchestral Songs Special Focus: Gustav Mahler’s Symphonies and Lieder with Professional Symphony Orchestra

Program Description:
Elevate your artistry and build your professional portfolio by performing with a full symphony orchestra in the heart of Japan. The International Summer Academy 2026 invites talented sopranos, altos, and baritones for an intensive week of vocal and orchestral mastery. Under the expert guidance of conductor Naoki Sugiyama, participants will delve into the profound world of Romantic orchestral repertoire. The 2026 session focuses on the works of Gustav Mahler, offering a rare opportunity to bridge the gap between intimate Lieder and grand symphonic performance.

Participation Guide

  • All participants can perform in the Closing Concert.
  • Audio/Video recordings are available upon request.
  • Dates: August 14–21, 2026

  • Eligibility and Requirements:

  • Soprano: 2 (Max 3)
  • Alto or Baritone: 3 (Max 4)
  • Eligibility for the Summer Academy Festival is for professional singers and vocalists.
    Experience with an orchestra is not required, but vocal ability equivalent to a music university graduate is necessary.

    Capacity and Application Period:

    5 Participants (Max 7). Applications will be accepted starting November 1, 2025. Acceptance is determined by the order of payment. Registration will close once capacity is reached.
    Participants receive 30 minutes of private lesson and group lesson daily. Days 1–3 will be rehearsals with piano, and from Day 4, rehearsals will be with the orchestra.

    Content:

  • Rehearsals with piano and conductor
  • Rehearsals with orchestra and conductor
  • Closing Concert with the orchestra
  • Detailed schedules and programs will be announced at a later date.
    All participants will perform with the orchestra in the Closing Concert.
    All participants will receive a Certificate (Zertifikat). ​​​

  • Fees:

  • Adult (25+): 1200 Euros
  • Early bird fee 1,000 Euros Apply and pay by March 30. 2026 to take advantage of the early bird rate.
  • Student of Music Universities/Colleges under 25 (Number of spots are limited): 600 Euros
  • The cancellation policy is as follows:

  • Full refund (excluding bank transfer fees) for cancellations made on or before March 31, 2026
  • Partial refund (course fee minus €300) for cancellations made on or before June 30, 2026
  • No refund for cancellations made on or after July 1, 2026
    The Bank Account details and the amount will be announced after application.

    Applicants are requested to send their full name, nationality, age, and a short description of their musical education (school, instruments, experience in singing, teachers, etc.).

    We will reply with an email address for you to send your video audition URL.

    Applicants must upload a video of their performance (approx. 10 minutes of Lieder or arias, sung in German) to a video site such as YouTube and send the URL via email.

    Successful applicants will be provided with bank transfer details. Payment must be made via bank transfer.

    The application date will be the date the payment is confirmed.
